Apple Crisp

Serves 6 to 8

You may call it crisp, crumble, streusel or brown Betty, but you’d better call it good.  This old fashion dessert was the invention of busy house wives at harvest time, who didn’t have the time to fuss around with rolling out pie crust, so they just chucked the spiced apples in a baking dish, covered it with Streusel Topping and baked while they went on to other things.

Apple Pie Filling

Streusel Topping

Bakers Syrup

Preheat the oven to 350°.  Fill a baking dish with the prepared apple pie filling.  Sprinkle the top with about a half-inch thick layer of streusel topping.  Put the baking dish in the center of the oven and bake for about forty to forty-five minutes, or until the apples are very tender when pierced with a slim bamboo skewer.  Remove from the oven and paint the top generously with warm bakers syrup.  Serve warm or cold.  Sometimes it is nice to gild the lily with a bit of thick cream poured over each serving.  Ice cream is great too.
